The sign said "Toadstools Trailhead" and we reached the first of many formations of sandstone pillars topped by teetering rocks giving them the look of toadstools. The erosion of layers of soft sandstone into a pillar, capped by a harder layer on top, forms these mushroom-like sculptures.
As the sun set, the clouds that had been threatening rain started putting on this awesome show seeming to set the hills ablaze. I began to get a little concerned that my family would get caught in one hot mess of a storm, when the cloud formations quickly evolved into a simulation of these stony sentinels.
