The cliffs around Makapu'u point are at the extreme end of the Koolau mountain range on the island of Oahu, which means they are far from the higher range peaks that attract rainfall. As a result this end of the island is usually pretty dry. Cactus even thrive here, however a particularly rainy season not only supplied a lush bed of grass for this "living room" scene, but also provided some greenery for Manana island off the coast which is rarely so colorful.
